Yet another northern breed which was originally known as the Yorkshire Pheasant, Golden Pheasant or Old Fashioned Pheasant until 1914 when it officially became the Old English Pheasant Fowl
They were bred to be hardy and are excellent  foragers making them a good choice for free ranging. Despite being classified as a light breed they have ample breast meat which is of  excellent quality.
The birds we have are the beautiful rich burnished copper colour but according to the British Poultry Standards there is also a silver version which is described as "
white with beetle greeen-black markings" If anybody has any Old English Pheasant Fowl of this colour  I would love to hear from you.
Both sexes and colours have a moderately sized red comb with almond shaped white ear lobes. The legs and feet are slate blue in colour. The cock birds are 3kg and the hen birds 2.5kg in weight. The hens are recorded as laying an average of 160 eggs per year which are small (would say ours are medium) and white in colour,.but as we have kept no records we cannot clarify these figures.
